The American retail giant The Home Depot, the world's first in DIY material, has confirmed a security intrusion into its payment systems that have put the personal and financial information of tens of millions of customers at risk.

The intrusion has lasted five months and could be one of the biggest attacks in history on a corporate network, surpassing that of Target,  the third-largest retail chain in the United States that put the data and bank cards of 70 million customers at risk.

In fact, it is believed that hackers infiltrated The Home Depot using the "BlackPOS" tool, which they used in Target.

All customers who have made a purchase between April and September in any of the almost 4,000 stores that the company has in the United States and Canada are potentially affected. The users of the Mexican branches and those of the online portal HomeDepot.com have not been affected according to the first data.

Security experts have criticized Home Depot for not reporting the incident before and only doing so when outside investigators brought the case to light through information from anonymous company workers who would have found a variant of BlackPOS in their systems.

"This is not the way to act against a security intrusion of this magnitude, nor does it offer any indication that Home Depot can solve the problem from now on," said Erick Cowperthwaite, vice president of the security company Core Security.
